KAPUALEI, THE MO’O OF MOLOKAI
[06.08.12] IN THE SKY, HI
on the flight back to Oahu, i spotted the acclaimed mo’o. i’ve seen it before when i was on the island a couple years ago, but never in the air.
(correct me if needed) The legend starts with Kapualei as the aumakua of the Kamalo having a battle with an eastern aumakua of Kainalu named Kauhuhu, who was a shark. Kauhuhu wanted to be the aumakua from Kainalu to Kamalo and was determined to defeat Kapualei for the land. It was an epic battle as Kapualei lost more and more blood, and Kainalu felt victorious. Kainalu would return to Kainalu to boost victories and would return to Kamalo the next day to find Kapualei’s blood trail to his body that claimed the mountains of Kamalo. The last words were “I will ALWAYS be the aumakua of Kamalo! Even if I should die!”
